I’ve never been to a drive-in theater and finally got to experience one last weekend in Warwick, NY. It was a beautiful 70 degrees that night, with clear skies, bright stars, and a full moon. The kids were dressed in their pajamas and set up on beach chairs in the trunk of our SUV, while my husband and I sat on lawn chairs outside. We dug into our junky dinner from the concession stand as the movie started playing, and I heard my daughter say, “This is so much fun!” In other words, the experience was worth the wait.
The Warwick Drive-In plays six movies on three screens (double features on each), with one screen dedicated to kids’ flicks. We watched only the first show (Teen Titans Go! to the Movies) and then left, as the second one (Hotel Transylvania 3) was starting way too late. The first show begins at sundown, which was 8:45pm that weekend.
The town of Warwick is about an hour from Westchester, so it’s a bit far to go for a movie, but this isn’t your typical movie experience. Plus, the trip there was actually quite scenic and lovely; after getting off the 287, we spent the second half of the drive rolling along winding roads, past bucolic farms and pretty reservoirs and lakes. Don’t forget to wear long sleeves and pants and bring blankets. The temps drop quite a bit after the sun goes down!
