Many of us want to have conversations with our kids about building confidence, standing up to bullies, fostering resilience. But how? Monthly subscription box Wonder Crate takes the guess work out of some of the more challenging conversations in parenting by inspiring kids (ages 5 to 8) and grown-ups alike with a box of goodies. It works like this: A dozen empowerment projects will arrive at your front door once a month, each with its own dedicated theme, like empathy or mindfulness. As you unpack the items inside and engage in the projects, you and your child can unpack the theme together.
We got our first Wonder Crate the other day, titled: “I Can Stand Up For Myself and Others: A Confidence Box.” Inside, there was a small superhero figure to paint — “Since every superhero needs a sidekick” — as well as a paint your own affirmations mirror to record positive beliefs, a Superhero cape to iron-on included designs, as well as a “create your own comic book” craft. There were other things, too, like a bookmark, positive affirmation stickers, a pencil with a superhero cape, an inspiring card that read: “Determination is my power.”
My son jumped at some of the other items, too, like the “Confident” socks, which literally spell out confident along the sole. “I can wear these when I have something big happening,” he said. He and I also adored the book Super Manny Stands Up!, which is a wonderful story about a charming raccoon who dared. My little one, who is 3 and probably too young for the box, begged to paint the tiny superhero figure.
As a parent, I loved the “boosting confidence” guide. It had all sorts of pointers about how to connect the activities to the theme, including information about what to tell your kid about standing up for themselves, or even simple everyday activities that can boost confidence, like “give them a chore with purpose.” In the back, there are additional resources: books parents can read on the subject as well as books for kids. It even lists confidence-building songs, like Born This Way by Lady Gaga — a song I play whenever my kids need a boost.
Wonder Crate costs $24.95 a month, although there are differing price points, depending on how much you want in the box. But no matter what, get ready to be inspired.
