Mark your calendars for the very best children’s event in Westchester. On October 14th from 10am to 4pm, the Chappaqua Children’s Book Festival returns with eighty children’s authors and illustrators. Writers will read from their books at selected times as well as offer book signings and special activities. There will also be games, face painting, balloons, food and other festival fun, like a host of fictional characters come to life. Think: Clifford the dog.
Still, the best part about the festival is just how accessible the writers are. In a “great hall” like setting, authors sit at tables with their books on display beside them. It’s wonderful to steer your kids to some of their favorite stories and chat with the authors — feel free to ask them where they got inspiration for their stories, if they illustrate the books, what they plan to work on next. Some are more talkative than others, but my son has had some wonderful experiences in this context, with one illustrator even showing him how he draws the dinosaurs in his book.
The event, which is held at Bell Middle School in Chappaqua, takes place rain or shine and is free.
