Who says summer has to end after Labor Day? Certainly not Executive Chef Ethan Kostbar at Moderne Barn in Armonk. He’s extending the taste of the summer season with a September weeknight special: a buttermilk herb fried chicken, family-style dinner. We went last night with our 7-year-old and 2-year-old, and I have to tell you, it was finger licking’ good. (And despite the moment when our toddler threw an appetizer plate on the floor (gulp), we really enjoyed the upscale but unpretentious restaurant, too.)
Nestled into a booth in the bright and airy dining room, we were served a bowl of moist fried (Freebird) chicken with the most addictive crisp and crunchy crust this side of the Mason Dixon line. And since the dinner is made to share, it came with family-style flavorful sides. The garlic mashed potatoes were whipped to perfection. The red cabbage slaw won over my older one, and the grilled corn (sprinkled with large flakes of sea salt!) brought us back to our vacations on the North Fork, since it was from a farm in Orient. The kids fought over slices of watermelon, while my husband and I sipped peach-flavored sweet tea.
Delish. The dinner costs $49 for the chicken, sides and the sweet tea, and it is meant to serve two to three hungry adults — or two parents and two young kids. Even with four of us eating at the table, we left with three pieces of fried chicken in a doggie bag. Moderne Barn will be serving the fried chicken special Monday through Thursday throughout the month of September. We may end up back there before it ends. Note: they don’t serve it on weekends.
