With the first day of school just around the corner, I’ve become obsessed with lunch box items and ideas. This is the first year we won’t be buying school lunch (the kids begged to be able to bring their own), and I’m terrified of the idea of packing a meal for both kids every morning. I’m hoping, though, that if I’m armed with the right tools, I’ll make it through the school year. Here are some of the really cool things I’ve found.
Jigsaw Puzzle Sandwich Cutter
There are lots of cool sandwich shape cutters out there, but I particularly love this puzzle shapes cutter. When your sandwich is a working jigsaw puzzle, it almost doesn’t matter what’s inside!
We discovered these Rei sporks when we received one in a goody bag from a birthday party last year, and since then I’ve gotten a few more. They’re as amusing to the kids as they are useful.
We invested in a Bentgo kids bento box lunch box last fall, and it’s still very much in use. I just bought a second one. There’s something really satisfying and fun about filling all the little compartments with a variety of foods!
Kids’ Lunch Cookbook
There’s no shortage of lunchbox ideas on Pinterest (like the Kitchn one shown at top), but sometimes it’s just easier to have a cookbook in the kitchen that the kids can pore through. The Best Homemade Kids Lunches on the Planet by Laura Fuentes offers a range of nutritious ideas that don’t get too crazy or complicated.
Lunch Box Joke Notes
My kids are both really into the jokes that you find on the back of juice boxes or on Popsicle sticks. So it was perfect when I found these books of tear-out jokes that you can pop into their lunch boxes for fun. I only wish I were there to see them read the notes and share them with their friends!
