Actor Andrew McCarthy stole my heart trying to woo Molly Ringwald in Pretty in Pink when I was 11-years-old. I fell deeper after watching his other hits: “Less Than Zero,” “St. Elmo’s Fire,” and “Weekend at Bernie’s.” Well, the eighties heartthrob is speaking in Westchester this week. It turns out McCarthy has done so much since those eighties flicks; he directed the hit series Orange is the New Black and Blacklist. He even serves as editor-at-large at National Geographic Traveler.
And he’s just written his first novel.
Just Fly Away, which goes on sale March 28th, is about a 15-year-old girl who discovers a family secret that turns her life upside down. McCarthy is reading from the book, geared for teens, and taking questions at Barnes and Noble in Eastchester on Wednesday, March 29th at 7pm. The event is free, but those that pre-purchase the book will be given an actual seat. (They expect the event to be standing room only.)
I’ve gotta go, even just to sneak a glimpse at my teenage dream.
