I was poking around Pinterest for ideas on making personalized ornaments last night, and came across a great one: time capsule ornaments. All you have to do is take a clear fillable ball ornament and stuff it with items that represent your child at the moment, then paint the year on the outside.
The contents could be as simple as a list of their favorites (food, book, toy, etc.), plus a photo. Or you could make it really cute and include miniature representations of these things. Some ideas I had for stuffing my son’s ornament:
An uncooked macaroni to represent mac ‘n’ cheese
A Pokémon figurine
An eraser shaped like a basketball
A mini printout of the covers of his favorite book, folded in half, so it looks like a little book
A Lego block
A crayon of his favorite color
A souvenir magnet from a vacation we went on this year
If you really wanted to go nuts with this, you can find mini anything from dollhouse accessory websites like this one!
I like that this project encourages you to do a “year in review” with your kids, and that they can help come up with ideas on what to stuff the ornament with. I also happen to be in love with the idea of time capsules, so this DIY appealed to me on many different levels. If you end up making one, please share it with us on Instagram (@weewestchester) — we’d love to see it!
