Did you know that you can take a tour of the Sleepy Hollow Lighthouse? That same lighthouse you see from RiverWalk or driving across the Tappan Zee. On certain Sundays from April through August, the attraction (also known as Tarrytown Light) is open to visitors from 1 to 3 pm, and anyone can climb to the top after paying a small donation. We explored the lighthouse as part of a really pleasant day trip.
To access the lighthouse, park at the Kingsland Point Park lot, then walk about five minutes along the water, toward the left. You’ll have to cross a rather precarious-looking bridge at the end — my kids loved that part.
Once inside, you’ll learn that caretakers and their families lived at the lighthouse until as recently as the mid-1900s. The living room/kitchen with a wood-burning stove on the ground floor is super cool, as is the bedroom on the second floor, with historical documents adorning the walls. A historian told us that the children who lived in the lighthouse had to row a boat into Tarrytown to go to school every day.
At the top we found a giant bell that the kids were encouraged to ring with a mallet. And of course, the views of the Hudson and Tappan Zee construction couldn’t be beat.
Afterwards, we stopped at the tiny beach on the way back to the parking lot. Don’t plan on hanging out here long — it really is small — but my kids spent some time throwing driftwood into the water. There’s also a cute playground at Kingsland Point Park.
Plenty of families were picnicking at the park, but since we didn’t pack a lunch, we drove to the nearby Bridge View Tavern instead, where we devoured some truly excellent pub food, including an ooey-gooey mac and cheese for the kids. (I’m still thinking about my bacon jam chicken sandwich and onion rings!) The restaurant also offers a nice panorama of the water if you snag a window seat, plus 18 kinds of craft beer on tap.
If you have any room in your stomach left after that, stop off at Lighthouse Ice Cream Kompany (LICK) for dessert. Their gelato is the real deal.
