My son turned six last week. SIX! And I needed a cake for his birthday party. I surveyed mommy friends for their recommendations. “Definitely Costco,” said one. Another suggested ShopRite — “tastes the best!” Of course, Riviera Bakehouse, a pillar of sweet stuff in these parts, was thrown out as an option, too.
One friend had particularly good things to say about ABC Cakes in Mamaroneck, so we gave it a try. We wanted a cake that looked like a robot, and Duran Radulovic, a second generation baker and owner of ABC Cakes, told me to send a picture. Here’s what I sent:
What she produced was so incredible, I really didn’t want to cut it up and serve it. “Oh please, you better eat it,” Duran joked. “That’s why I baked it.”
Inside it was vanilla cake with chocolate filling, and it tasted so good that parents commented on how delicious it was. It was expensive — $140 — but worth every penny. My son’s expression when he saw it was priceless. It’s definitely a cake to remember.
