Our friends over at Fifi and Hop recently visited Storm King Art Center. They loved it so much they wrote us a report. Now I’m dying to go!
One of our favorite places to go where the kids can run free, all the while viewing incredible art, is Storm King Art Center. Like many families we know who have visited, we absolutely love it here.
Located in the lower Hudson Valley about an hour north of New York City, Storm King is one of the world’s premier sculpture parks, with more than 100 sculptures and installations situated across 500 acres of fields, hills and woodlands. It is a place all ages can enjoy. I have been going since my twenties and now that I have kids, it has been so great to take them to a place that has inspired me for so long.
The landscape is beautiful, set against the backdrop of both the Storm King and Schunnemunk Mountains. It’s a perfect place to leisurely stroll the green fields and wooded trail paths — and go on an art hunt. The sculptures, both large and small scale, are by many of the world’s most acclaimed artists, including Alexander Calder, Louise Bourgeois, Sol Lewitt, Maya Lin, Henry Moore, Richard Serra, the list goes on.
And my personal favorite, Andy Goldsworthy, whose rock wall titled “Storm King Wall” seems to go on forever … his work never ceases to amaze me. There is so much to see, both art and nature wise, one can spend all day here. And if you want to take a break from the outdoors, there’s the Museum Building, which contains sculptures as well. Additionally, Storm King offers a variety of classes, and if you are looking for an activity to do with your child during the summer or fall, there are hands-on programs every Sunday at 1 pm.
It has become tradition for us to go about once every season (except winter). Whether you have children young or old, all will be lured by Storm King’s majestic setting, with its world-class sculptures beautifully curated to mix in with the landscape. It is the ideal day trip and a must-visit!
