For such a small town, Chappaqua has lots of good places to eat. I can’t swing past South Greeley (the main drag) without picking up a beet salad at LOCAL, a casual farm-to-table cafe. (Then there’s Crabtree’s Kittle House. Sigh.)
Last Friday, I was at a baby shower at Chappaqua village hotspot Le Jardin du Roi, a cozy and totally kid-friendly French bistro with outdoor seating on King Street. Don’t be fooled by its understated facade: the Who’s Who of northern Westchester dine here. A few months ago, my husband and I were seated next to Matchbox 20 singer Rob Thomas, who lives nearby in Bedford.
I’ve been looking for a good (I mean, really good!) Westchester burger since moving here. Something a little more interesting than the beloved Piper’s Kilt burger in Eastchester, but not so fancy that it no longer tastes like a greasy burger. The women at the baby shower swore by Le Jardin du Roi’s cheeseburgers, so even though I was at a French restaurant, I ordered “les hamburger.”
A manager named Wendy told me I just had to try it with melted brie. I had my doubts, but she was passionate, so I listened.
Oh. My. Burger. After one bite, I realized I found my Westchester burger nirvana.
First of all, the burger was honking big and juicy. It was also tender. The melted brie cheese gave it a creamy top-off, almost like a thick melty spread, and the bun was soft enough to sink your teeth into but substantial enough to carry the hamburger itself. I smeared mayo on, but I didn’t need to. Just adding red onion, crisp lettuce and a juicy tomato was enough. (I snapped a photo, but it was so bad I couldn’t post!)
Did I mention the fries? I ate every last one. And this is how you know this burger is really good. I haven’t stopped thinking about it since.
As far as Westchester burgers go, this one is tops.
Le Jardin du Roi’s burgers are available at lunch and dinner, and range in price from $15 to $16.75 depending on the toppings. Le Jardin du Roi, 95 King Street, Chappaqua; 914-238-1368
