I’m having my house painted this week, and we decided to paint the porch ceiling blue. A designer friend (who helped select our house colors) suggested it. Apparently, it’s an old Southern tradition. Check it out — it’s pretty cool. (Full disclosure: That’s not my house. Or my husband! I just loved the porch!)
In the Carolina Low Country, the color was thought to ward off “haints” or evil spirits, so homeowners began using it to paint their porch ceilings. We’re using Benjamin Moore’s Marlboro Blue.
Others believe that blue is a harbinger of good luck, it wards off bugs, and may extend daylight.
I love that it mimics a beautiful blue sky. Plus, that unexpected pop of color makes me happy. Happy Sunday!
