Be sure to check out our calendar pages for a full list of events taking place Mother’s Day weekend.
Start Your Weekend Early
Start your Mother’s Day weekend off mid-week by meeting up with your best gal pals at TheWestchester’s first Mom’s Nite Out on Thursday, May 10. The concept is simple: Retailers are rolling out the red carpet for moms. From 5 to 8pm, moms can sample food from a variety of local chefs, pop into their favorite stores for a treat (7 for Mankind is offering champagne, while Crate & Barrel is serving up gourmet lemonade), enter giveaways and take advantage of special Mother’s Day sales.
If you’re ready to get your hands dirty in the garden, there are plenty of plant sales to get you started. Check out the greenery this weekend at the Green Acres Garden Club Plant Sale in Armonk, the Beczak Environmental Education Center Plant Sale in Yonkers, and Teatown Plant Sale + Wildflower Island in Ossining. Numerous farmers markets will have pretty flowers to pot as well, like the Pleasantville Farmers Market, the Chappaqua Farmers Market, Hastings Farmers Market, Mamaroneck Indoor Family Market, White Plains Farmers Market, and Mount Kisco Farmers Market.
Take your little ones for a Mother’s Day Tea Party at Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture at 11am. Moms will pick tea leaves and prepare the tea, while kids ages 2 to 5 prepare finger sandwiches. Everyone will picnic in the farm’s tea field afterward. (Registration is required!) While the guided tour of the farm’s baby animals is sold out, you can still head down to the sheep fields to catch a glimpse of the baby lambs. Look at this pic that Stone Barns sent of one of the babies. Too cute!
There’s a Mother’s Day Garden Party at the New York Botanical Garden on Sunday. Play lawn games, fly a kite, and have a picnic in the fields of flowers.
Hiking and Biking Ideas
Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy the guided walk at Cranberry Lake preserve in West Harrison on Saturday at 1pm, since it will talk about animal mothers, babies, eggs and nests of every kind.
On Sunday from 10am to 2pm, the Bronx River Parkway shuts down and reserves all its lanes for biking as part of the Bronx River Parkways Bicycle Sundays.
Wake up to the sound of a lion’s roar? Yes, please. Grab your sleeping bags and head to the Bronx Zoo for its annual Family Sleepover.
The Secret Garden
So many of us girls loved the 1911 Frances Hodgsons Burnett book “The Secret Garden” as children. Introduce the tale to your own little ones Mother’s Day weekend. The White Plains Performing Arts Center is performing The Secret Garden musical Saturday and Sunday at 8pm, and Sunday at 2pm.
