Brunch used to be a staple in our house. Then we had Harper. Suddenly, going out to breakfast on a Sunday meant a trip to the local diner, lots of greasy bacon included.
If you miss the smell of warm sweet rolls on a Saturday (remember that basket of goodies at Sarabeth’s!) as much as I do, consider hiring a sitter for a “date day,” rather than a date night. Don’t feel guilty about leaving your little ones home on a Saturday or Sunday — it’s a few hours — and it’s totally legit to want to see your husband in the daylight hours sometimes too.
Head off to the Barn at the Bedford Post Inn, Richard Gere‘s urbane inn and restaurant in pretty Bedford. Unlike the Inn’s fancy Farmhouse restaurant (where you’ll likely choke on the prices), the Barn is just as charming — and much less expensive. (You can eat dinner at The Barn on Monday and Tuesday nights, breakfast all week long, and brunch on weekends.)
As soon as you settle into one of the rustic wood tables in the beam-ceilinged cafe or on the outdoor shaded patio, you can relax into a steaming cup of coffee, savor a pain au chocolate, and maybe even order some locally-raised eggs.
Despite its famous owner, this isn’t a place to be seen. It’s a place to relax, read the paper, and just be with your husband — like the way you used to spend a Sunday together.
