For the first summer ever, there’s been a lot of independent reading going on at my house. My daughter, age 9, has been steadily making her way through the Series of Unfortunate Events, while my son, age 7, has discovered the zany adventures of the My Weird School series. I’m so excited that they can both read by themselves now and have developed a love for enjoying books at the beach, on the plane, in the backyard.
The problem has become finding more good books for them to read! I’m constantly asking friends and the local librarian for recommendations. Barnes & Noble has compiled some interesting book lists for kids, based on age, genre and other categories. I’ve been referring to this page a lot for ideas.
My friend Tovah also mentioned to me that Barnes & Noble has its own summer reading program, where for every eight books your kids read, they’ll give them a book as a prize. Here is the link she sent me with more information.
